Carnarvon - Fatima Night

fatima 2014

A wonderful celebration of Our Lady of Fatima took place on Tuesday 13th May at Saint Mary Star of the Sea Parish in Carnarvon. The new Presbytery being built alongside the Church with a new Parish Centre although not finished is very near completion and in the days leading up to the special annual celebration of Our Lady of Fatima, there was a huge amount of activity endeavouring to have the new home for the Priests ready to move in for this event.

Father Adam and Father Greg were anxious to have everything in shipshape order with six Salvatorian Priests coming to join in the celebrations. Most of the visiting Priest s had previously worked in Carnarvon or could possibly do so in the future, so Parishioners were thrilled to have the Priests with them for the week.

The new building will be officially opened later in the year and the Portugese community have for years used the celebration of Our Lady of Fatima Feast Day to contribute to major projects, and especially the new Presbytery and Parish Centre.

The Mass of Our Lady of Fatima was celebrated by Father Adam, Parish Priest with Father Karol Kulczycki SDS giving the Homily. The procession followed with the 8 Priests, the 3 Children representing the Children of Fatima dressed in national costume, with a beautifully decorated Statue and Parishioners, with lanterns, processed along the road, and eventually back to the Church, with the Rosary being recited. Finally, exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Litany to our Lady and Benediction followed in the Church.

After the religious ceremonies, a Dinner was held, with the Portugese men cooking their special kebabs called “Espetadas”,with salads, vegetable dishes and Lucy’s home made bread, Portugese style. Beautiful sweets followed ending a superb meal.

Paul Fee and Peter Brooks with Estella DeGouvia ran a Spinning Wheel with Boxes of Chocolate, Chickens and Prawns as the prizes, and a “pig” was raffled. 3 magnificent donated Statues were auctioned wit h a lot of noise and a great monetary result! A Portugese Feast Day for Our Lady of Fatima was completed with an auction of ornate Roosters with a lot of fun and laughter.

A wonderful night and the Parishioners were so thrilled to have six Salvatorian Priests to help celebrate Our Lady of Fatima, and special thanks go to them for travelling to Carnarvon.
